Ariel Heryanto

Ariel Heryanto is Professor Emeritus at Monash University (from 2020) and affiliated with the

University’s Faculty of Arts. He served as the founding director of the Monash Herb Feith Indonesian Engagement Centre (2018-2020). Previously, he was a professor at the School of Culture, History and Language of The Australian National University (ANU) and Head of the Southeast Asian Centre of the ANU’s Faculty of Asian Studies. Ariel was born and grew up in Indonesia. He gained his first two degrees in education from Satya Wacana Christian University (Indonesia). He earned his Master of Arts degree in Asian Studies from the University of Michigan (USA) and Anthropology from Monash University (Australia). His primary fields of research include language policy, cultural studies, postcolonial studies and identity politics.

Ariel is the author of Identity and Pleasure: the politics of Indonesian screen culture, Singapore: NUS Press (2014); State Terrorism and Political Identity in Indonesia: Fatally Belonging, London: Routledge (2007); Language of Development and Development of Language, Pacific Linguistics (1995). He is the editor of Popular Culture in Indonesia: Fluid Identities in Post-Authoritarian Politics, London & New York: Routledge (2008), as well as co-editor of Pop Culture Formations Across East Asia, Seoul: Jimoondang (2010) and of Challenging Authoritarianism in Southeast Asia; Comparing Indonesia and Malaysia, London: RoutledgeCurzon (2003).
