Joseph D. Steele

Joseph D. Steele (b. 1982 Ridgewood NJ USA) is an artistic researcher and filmmaker who holds a PhD in Emergent Technology and Media Art Practices from the Department of Critical Media Practices at University of Colorado Boulder. He is a freelance lecturer and a research affiliate of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam. Based in the Netherlands, his work examines ethnographic modes of representation and how artists can trouble discourses, working with ethnography, the archive and exhibitionary spaces. Joe has presented lecture-performances, films, installations, curatorial projects and papers internationally. He is now working on a new research project collaborating with artist collectives in the Caribbean and continues working on the manuscript “Archive Poiēsis: On the Practice of Renée Green”.
